Carrollton Apartment Locator: Three Rail Stops, Three Counties

Our Carrollton apartment locator team checked 29 places this week, and 16 of them have specials. Prices start at $854 a month after free rent. Carrollton has more rail than most northern suburbs: three Green Line stations, a Silver Line stop at the old square and a transfer to the A-train toward Denton. Garden complexes along Josey, Marsh and Old Denton make up the middle of the market. Newer buildings sit by Downtown Carrollton and up along Frankford, and older complexes line Belt Line. The city spans Dallas, Denton and Collin counties, so the county and school district can change between neighboring addresses.

Pick what you want. We compare each deal with buildings like it here: same size, about the same age.

Why our prices are lower than what the community quotes

When a community gives free rent, we spread it over the whole lease and show what you pay a month on average. The community quotes the full rent, and many take the free rent off your first months. You pay the same total either way. Our way lets you compare one deal with another. Fees and the deposit are extra.

Areas we cover inside Carrollton

  • Downtown CarrolltonThe old square is the heart of Carrollton.

  • Josey RanchAround Josey Lane and Keller Springs Road, Josey Ranch Lake sits beside the Josey Ranch Lake Library.

Garden complexes from the 1980s and 1990s line Josey Lane, and the Bush Turnpike and Tollway are both a short drive.

  • Old Denton RoadOld Denton Road runs north and south through east Carrollton, parallel to I-35E, up past Trinity Mills.

Older garden complexes and duplexes fill most of its frontage, and Trinity Mills station is close for the Green Line and the A-train.

  • Belt LineBelt Line Road crosses south Carrollton past the old downtown, with I-35E and the Farmers Branch line close by.

Apartments near it are mostly plain garden complexes from the 1970s and 1980s. The Green and Silver lines are a short trip from the square.

  • FrankfordFrankford Road crosses north Carrollton, where North Carrollton/Frankford station marks the Green Line's northern end.

Complexes up here tend to be newer than in the south part of the city, and the Bush Turnpike is close.

  • Marsh LaneOn Carrollton's east side, Marsh Lane crosses Trinity Mills Road and Rosemeade Parkway near the Dallas line.

Rentals are a mix of 1980s garden complexes and leased houses, with the Bush Turnpike and Tollway each a few minutes off.

  • Trinity MillsTrinity Mills station, near I-35E, is where you switch between the DART Green Line and the DCTA A-train to Lewisville and Denton.

DART Green Line, I-35E, and Getting Around Carrollton

Three Green Line stations run south to north through the city: Downtown Carrollton, Trinity Mills and North Carrollton/Frankford. Downtown Carrollton doubles as a Silver Line stop with trains to DFW Airport and Plano, and at Trinity Mills you can switch to DCTA's A-train for Lewisville and Denton.

The restored square by Downtown Carrollton station is the city's walkable pocket, with restaurants in old storefronts and newer apartments within a few blocks. The rest of Carrollton is built around the car. I-35E handles north and south trips along the west side, the Bush Turnpike crosses the middle toward Plano and Irving, and Belt Line is the main east to west street.

Downtown Dallas is straight down I-35E, and rush hour adds a lot. The train takes longer but spares you the drive.

What Rents in Carrollton, From Garden Complexes to New Buildings

The bulk of the market is garden complexes along Josey Lane, Marsh Lane and Old Denton Road. Most have been updated at least once, and management companies run them with posted income and credit rules. A yes with conditions, such as a bigger deposit, is more common here than in most northern suburbs.

Belt Line has the older buildings, where managers still decide one renter at a time. The hidden cost? Utilities. Some buildings run on one shared meter and add a flat charge to the lease, and others divide the water bill among all units. Ask which, and whether the charge changes with the season.

Newer buildings cluster near Downtown Carrollton and along Frankford near the north end of the Green Line, with move-in specials and longer fee lists. Houses, duplexes and townhomes for rent are easy to find too, and there are more three bedroom homes here than in most of inner Dallas.

Living in Carrollton day to day

Carrollton mixes a walkable old square, a big Korean food district and plain suburban blocks, with three train stations. Errands mean a car, and nights out mean the square or Old Denton Road.

To fly without a car, take the Silver Line from Downtown Carrollton station to DFW Airport's Terminal B. It heads east to Plano too. Koreatown, around Old Denton Road and the Bush Turnpike, sits about a mile from Trinity Mills station.

What we tell Carrollton renters

On Switchyard festival day, the streets around the square close and parking fills, so don't plan a move that Saturday. McInnish can close in floods or high water, so check before a weekend game. If you'll fly often, a home near Downtown Carrollton station puts the Silver Line to DFW within a short walk.

Carrollton questions

Which school district serves my Carrollton address?

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD covers most of the city. The north side is mostly Lewisville ISD, and a small part of the south is Dallas ISD. Each district's boundary lookup tells you for a specific address.

Which county would I be living in?

Dallas, Denton or Collin, depending on the address. The county is where you register your car and vote, so check it before you apply.

Yes to both. For Denton, ride the Green Line to Trinity Mills and change to the A-train. For the airport, the Silver Line leaves from Downtown Carrollton station.

How are utilities billed in older Carrollton complexes?

Some older buildings on Belt Line run on one meter and add a flat utility fee; others divide the water bill among all units. Find out which before you line up rents side by side, using our true monthly cost calculator for the totals. Before those charges, a typical Carrollton one bedroom is $1,103, and the cheapest open one is $854 with the special counted in.
