## Areas we cover inside Kaufman

- **Historic Downtown Kaufman**: A few blocks of brick buildings ring the county courthouse downtown, where SH-34 and SH-243 split. Older frame houses and a few small apartment buildings fill the surrounding streets.
- **Courthouse Square**: The Kaufman County Courthouse sits on the square at Grove and Washington streets, and county offices, law offices and small shops ring it. On weekdays the parking fills up with people on court and county business.
- **Kaufman City Lake Park**: Kaufman's big park is City Lake Park, roughly 230 acres off SH-34 on the northeast side of town. It has a disc golf course and fishing on the city lakes. Homes nearby are mostly houses, with some newer subdivisions on the north side.
- **US-175 Corridor**: US-175 bypasses downtown Kaufman to the south and west, carrying traffic northwest to Crandall, Seagoville and Dallas, and southeast toward Athens. The county justice center, chain stores and fast food line the bypass.
- **North Kaufman**: North Kaufman follows SH-34 toward Terrell and I-20, which is about 15 minutes away. Newer subdivisions sit between older homes on larger lots, and the city lake park is on this side.
- **South Kaufman**: South of the square, older neighborhoods give way to county roads and pasture, with US-175 curving around the edge. Most rentals here are houses, along with a few duplexes.

## Kaufman Apartment Locator Help With Wells, Power and Owner Leases

- A straight answer pointing you to Forney or Terrell when you need an apartment complex
- The power company, well and septic to ask the owner about before you pay a deposit
- Owners who have looked at a complicated credit file, kept in our notes

## US-175 to Dallas, co-op power and wells

US-175 runs northwest about 35 miles to Downtown Dallas through Crandall and Seagoville. The drive takes about 38 minutes with no traffic by our drive times, and about 47 at 8am. SH-34 heads north to Terrell and southwest to Ennis. Transit? Only STAR Transit rides booked ahead.

Power around Kaufman depends on the address. Some homes are on Oncor, where you can shop for a plan, and others are on Trinity Valley Electric Cooperative, with no plan to pick. Outside the city core, many homes use wells and septic, so ask what the lease says about upkeep.

## Houses from owners, and where to look next

Apartment complexes with a leasing office and written rules are rare in Kaufman. Most rentals are houses and duplexes listed by their owners.

Owners decide case by case, so they may approve a complicated history a big company would turn down. The catch is supply: there isn't much to rent. For more choice, Forney has newer garden communities along US-80 and rental home neighborhoods, and Terrell has older garden complexes with looser screening.

## Daily life in Kaufman

Kaufman is the Kaufman County seat, a small town built around its courthouse square. Life is quiet, with a big lake park on the northeast side and a few hometown events each year.

### Kaufman to Dallas and back

By our count, it's about 47 minutes to Downtown Dallas at 8am, 57 to the Medical District and about 70 to DFW Airport or Legacy West. Weekday mornings are the slow ones, so a court or county job in town makes for an easy commute. SH-34 is the way north to Terrell and I-20.

- **Kaufman County Courthouse** (landmark): The center of town; walk the square on a weekday for lunch or county errands, and park a block off.

### City Lake Park

Kaufman City Lake Park, about 232 acres, sits off SH-34 northeast of the square. Its 9 hole disc golf course is free and takes about an hour to play over a mile or so. The park has fishing on the city lakes and room to walk.

- **Kaufman City Lake Park** (park): Play the free 9 hole disc golf course on a cool evening, or fish the city lakes on a weekend morning.

### Hometown events

Harvest Fest is the free fall day on the historic square, with a morning parade, vendors and a scarecrow contest. On July 4, Red, White and Boom starts with a 9am parade and ends with fireworks. In May, Cars for CASA, a car show that has run for about 20 years, raises money for Lone Star CASA.

- **Kaufman Harvest Fest** (festival): Come downtown in the fall for the scarecrows and vendors on the square; it's free and easy to walk.
