# Garland Apartment Locator: Firewheel to Broadway, on City Power

Garland is a big city northeast of Dallas that runs its own electric utility, Garland Power and Light, so most renters here don't shop for a plan. Newer complexes cluster near Firewheel, garden complexes fill the north and east sides, and older walkups line Broadway, Jupiter and Kingsley, where screening bends the most. Houses for rent are plentiful too.

## Garland rents this week

We check these numbers every week. Updated November 6, 2026. Where a place has a firm move-in special, its rent counts the free rent spread evenly over the lease. Rents are before fees. 39 communities in Garland had homes available; 24 listed a move-in special. Method: https://apartmentlocatordallas.com/rent-data-methodology/

Our read this week: Newer buildings here cost about $289 more a month than middle age ones, even after their free rent ($1,269 vs. $980 for a 1 bedroom). If price matters most, start with the older buildings. Free rent runs bigger at newer buildings: about 9 weeks, compared with 4 at middle age ones. 4 buildings here are brand new or still opening, and 3 of them have a move-in special right now. New buildings have to fill up fast, so they usually give the biggest deals.

## Garland Apartments on City Power, Firewheel to Broadway

- What moving onto Garland Power and Light means if you're coming from an Oncor address
- Bush Turnpike tolls counted with the rent for Richardson, Plano and Legacy commutes
- Cooling to ask about at the older walkups on Broadway, Jupiter and Kingsley before a summer move
- Complexes that have taken a weak credit file with a bigger deposit

## Getting Around Garland, and Life on City Power

I-635 cuts across Garland's southwest corner, the Bush Turnpike arcs across the north toward Richardson and Plano, and SH-78 runs through the middle into downtown Garland. Most commutes start on one of the three.

Garland is a DART member with real bus service. The Blue Line stops at Downtown Garland station by the square on its way to Rowlett. Forest/Jupiter station serves the west side near the Dallas line, and both give a direct ride to Downtown Dallas.

For jobs in Richardson's Telecom Corridor, Plano or Legacy West, the Turnpike is the practical route, and [NTTA's toll calculator](https://www.ntta.org/toll-calculator) shows what a week of trips costs. Electricity is the other surprise. Garland Power and Light serves most of the city, with no plan to pick and no contract, and your old provider won't follow you here.

## What Rents in Each Part of Garland

Each part of town rents its own way. Firewheel and the north edge hold the newer buildings, including garden communities from the mid 2000s on and rental home communities to the east. Buildings still filling up there give the most free rent.

Garden complexes with carports, pools and laundry rooms on site fill much of the north and east sides, many run by large management companies with set rules. Broadway, Jupiter and Kingsley have the older walkups, two or three floors and built in the 1970s and 1980s. They tend to be more flexible on credit and rental history. Before a summer visit there, ask about cooling, since window units and old central cooling systems still turn up.

Houses and duplexes from individual owners make up a real share of the rentals, including plenty of three and four bedroom choices.

## Living in Garland, from the square to Firewheel

Garland is big enough to cover most of life. It has a train stop by the square, real woods and dirt bike trails, groceries from many countries and a big outdoor mall up north.

### Blue Line trains and the drive in

Downtown Garland Station sits a short walk from the square, and Forest/Jupiter Station serves the west side; both are on DART's Blue Line. South Garland Transit Center is the bus hub on the south side of the city. Timed at 8am, Legacy West is about 31 minutes away, the Medical District 41, Downtown Dallas 42 and DFW Airport 43.

- **Downtown Garland Station** (rail station): Walk over from the square and ride the Blue Line to work or a game downtown, no parking hunt at the other end.
- **Forest/Jupiter Station** (rail station): The Blue Line stop for Garland's west side near the Dallas line, handy if you live off Jupiter Road.

### Old woods, bike loops and dog runs

Rowlett Creek Preserve has about 16 miles of dirt trail in stacked loops, from beginner to hard. Spring Creek Forest Preserve keeps a stand of old hardwoods on the north side, and Duck Creek Park, Holford Park and Springfield Park cover picnics and ballgames. Central Park and the Garland Dog Park sit near downtown for a quick walk after work.

- **Spring Creek Forest Preserve** (nature preserve): Go on a hot afternoon for shade under the big old trees, and bring bug spray in the warm months.
- **Rowlett Creek Preserve** (nature preserve): Ride or hike the dirt loops early on summer mornings; pick a short loop or chain them together for a long day.
- **Garland Dog Park** (dog park): Off leash space near Central Park and the square, where a dog can burn off energy before dinner.
- **Duck Creek Park** (park): Spread out on the lawn for a weekend picnic or walk the paths by the creek.

### Fried chicken dinners and food by the square

Downtown Garland has a set of places to eat around the square, and Fortunate Son serves pizza a block or so away. Babe's Chicken Dinner House, about two miles from the square, is the long running fried chicken dinner served family style. Farther out, the city's Latin food runs deep: La Salsa Verde Taquería for tacos and Panaderia Guatemalteca La Mejor for sweet bread and pastries.

- **Fortunate Son** (pizza): Grab pizza near the square before a show at the Granville Arts Center, a short walk away.
- **Babe's Chicken Dinner House** (fried chicken): Bring a group and come hungry; the sides come to the table to share, so it's made for a big dinner.
- **La Salsa Verde Taquería** (tacos): A cheap taco plate for lunch or a late dinner, a couple of miles from downtown.
- **Panaderia Guatemalteca "La Mejor"** (bakery): Pick up sweet bread and pastries for breakfast on a weekend morning, about a mile from the square.

### Weekly runs and markets from many places

Firewheel Town Center is the big outdoor mall on the north side. For groceries, Garland gives you a wide pick. WinCo Foods has low prices, and Fiesta Mart and El Rancho Supermercado carry Latin groceries. Tom Thumb and Walmart Neighborhood Market cover the usual run, and Cali Saigon Mall puts Vietnamese shops and food under one roof.

- **Firewheel Town Center** (shopping center): Park once and walk the open air streets for shopping, dinner and a movie on a Saturday.
- **Cali Saigon Mall** (shopping center): Go hungry; walk the Vietnamese shops and grab lunch inside on a weekend afternoon.
- **WinCo Foods** (grocery): Save on the big weekly shop; bag your own groceries and stock up from the bulk aisle.

### Shows, games and July 3 on the square

The Granville Arts Center, steps from the square, is the city's stage for plays and concerts. Each July 3, Garland's Red, White & You festival fills the square with live music and food trucks. On fall Fridays, Williams Stadium and Homer B Johnson Stadium host high school football.

- **Granville Arts Center** (theater): Check the season list for plays and concerts, and pair a show with dinner on the square.
- **Garland City Square** (town square): Come for July 3 fireworks and live music, or a slow evening walk around the square any time.
- **Williams Stadium** (stadium): Catch a high school game on a fall Friday, under a mile from the Garland square.

### What we tell renters looking in Garland

If you'll ride DART every day, look within a short walk of Downtown Garland Station or Forest/Jupiter and time that walk before you sign. Rowlett Creek's trails keep set hours, so summer riders go early. On July 3, the square fills for Red, White & You, so homes right by downtown get the crowds and the fireworks.

## Garland questions

### Can I pick my own electric plan in Garland?

At most addresses, no. The city's utility, Garland Power and Light, serves most of Garland, so there's nothing to shop on Power to Choose and no contract to break. A few edge addresses are on Oncor, so ask for a recent bill.

### Which school district serves a Garland address?

Garland ISD serves most of the city. Small parts are in Richardson ISD and Mesquite ISD. The district's own map answers it for your exact address.

### Can I take DART from Garland?

Yes. Downtown Garland station and Forest/Jupiter station are on the Blue Line with a direct ride to Downtown Dallas. From most addresses you'll still drive to the station.

### Do older Garland apartments have central air?

Not always. Some older buildings on Broadway, Jupiter and Kingsley use window units or an old central cooling system. Ask what cools the unit and how you pay for it before a summer move. Garland's typical one bedroom goes for $1,117. The cheapest open one we found is $674 after free rent.

### Is there an apartment locator near Garland?

Yes. We cover Garland from the Firewheel complexes to the older buildings on Broadway and Kingsley, and we'll tell you which addresses sit on city power and which need a Turnpike commute.
